Steve Hackney met Richard way back in 1998. At the time Richard had his own accountancy firm. But like so many firms they’d reached a point of stagnation. Richard was finding it hard to acquire the right type of clients in the numbers he needed.

The 3 Reasons Richard Wasn’t Getting Results…

First, Richard’s firm was like every other firm of accountants. Richard hadn’t differentiated it from the competition. Richard was finding it difficult to provide any substantial reasons why a business owner should use his firm rather than any other. Therefore Richard found himself competing on price more often than he should have been.

Second, Richard didn’t have any kind of marketing system. One which should work on autopilot once in place. Instead Richard used ad-hoc marketing which never achieves consistently good results.

For example, Richard was faced with challenges such as running ads that never got a phone call or email. Sending out letters and then checking with the post office to see if they actually got delivered because of the terrible response Richard used to get. And having a web site that cost him an arm and a leg but created very little in terms of new clients coming through the door.

And third, Richard didn’t have a cast-iron system for generating referrals.

In other words he was doing what every other firm of accountants was doing.

The Start Of Something New…

So to cut a long story short, together Richard and Steve set about putting in place a system which started to transform his practice adding £100,000 in gross recurring fees every year to the practice. Ultimately Richard merged that existing firm with a large regional firm and then decided to start and grow another firm which he sold in 2009 to a national firm for a high end multiple.
